PERSPECTIVES IN CAKE (2025 - present)

This series builds upon art making & baking crossover exploration that started with the Desert Landscapes collage series, combining my two primary creative outlets.

I was inspired by a recent purchase of heavy-body, 3-D acrylic paint, to use it as “frosting” to create collage-filled cakes, cake slices, and some cupcakes. Pieces in this series contain a variety of collage materials, including original collage pieces, and sourced collage materials from vintage and contemporary cookbooks, magazines, and books.

There is a slightly skewed perspective of the cakes and cake slices, in order to see more area of frosting and to add some playfulness. I’ve primarily used singular colors of frosting on each piece to create greater contrast with the collage cake inside and the backgrounds. Some of the wood panels have textured backgrounds that add to the combination and composition of elements in each piece.

I encourage viewers to consider the relationship with and amongst cake “ingredients”. What can cake be made of and what does each ingredient have to say? What fuels, delights or satisfies? What repulses or causes question? What ingredients are you drawn to most?
