4-LETTER WORDS (2025)

This series of artwork represents my current struggle with the duality of visibility and invisibility, which sometimes necessitates swearing.

Building on my textured canvas work with acrylic paint, a variety of mediums, and oil sticks, the vibrant canvases and visible textures want to be noticed, seen. This mirrors my desire to be visible as an artist and to share my work, while creating a new career path.

The tracing paper words were initially transparent, hiding amongst textures and colors. They paralleled my desire for invisibility, as I have isolated myself due to recent health issues that are invisible to others; and if I were invisible, perhaps I would experience less fear and rejection as an artist.

The four-letter words are verbs – actions. Some are also nouns, but this series is about actions and pushing myself toward increased visibility as an artist, while experiencing multiple life and health shifts. I used white oil pastel and white paint to allow the words to become more visible, with a ghostly quality.
